If you are contemplating a new weight loss diet, then a diet high in fat probably doesn’t sound like a good idea. However, just because you are trying to lose fat doesn’t mean you should avoid fat.
A diet with high fat for losing weight is entirely possible and actually recommended. These diets are usually referred to as low carb high fat(LCHF) diets and are growing in popularity.
There was a time when the idea of high fat for losing weight was laughed at. Many people embraced a diet that removed fats or restricted them as much as possible. Some people succeeded with such diets, but mostly because of their physical lifestyles rather than the diet itself. Today, people are embracing exactly the opposite, but why?
Why High Fat Diets Work.
Every diet can be broken down into three categories. Those categories are carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. These are your three basic macronutrients and they should add up to 100 percent of your diet. Of these nutrients protein is the choice that is “always healthy”. You should always aim to meet your protein goals each day, but then what?
Once your protein goals are met the rest of your diet falls into either the carbohydrates or fats category. Though neither of them sounds appealing at first, diving a little deeper reveals that displacing carbs with fats is actually beneficial in terms of weight loss. There are a few reasons why.
Replacing Those Carbs With Fats.
Insulin can be thought of as the commander giving orders to the various nutrients in the body. The body utilizes nutrients differently according to its insulin levels. When insulin levels are low it makes it easier to access the fat stored in the body and convert that body fat into energy. At the same time, it allows new fat to fuel muscles as well.
How are insulin levels lowered naturally? By eating fewer carbohydrates. Reducing carbohydrate intake results in reduced insulin levels. Thus, by using an LCHF diet you are increasing the body’s ability to burn existing fat while also fueling muscles with the high fat intake of your meals.
Feel Full And Satisfied.
Have you ever tried a low calorie diet that left you feeling hungry and unsatisfied? It was probably a diet low in fat and higher in carbohydrates. Such diets often ignore foods like cheese and fatty fish. It actually makes more sense to include these foods in your diet because the fat has a satiating effect that leaves you feeling full and satisfied.
When you feel full and satisfied you are less likely to eat more and less likely to snack later on in the day. This all stems from a hormonal reaction that occurs when the fats reach the small intestines.
Not only do low carb high fat diets help you burn fat more efficiently, but they leave you feeling full and satisfied. It is a great way to lose weight, especially when you combine an LCHF diet with daily exercise and plenty of protein.
